Aix-en-Provence transitions from a connected city to a smart city
The city of Aix-en-Provence has implemented an IoT network to meet its priorities in terms of urban mobility, energy saving and environmental friendliness.
Aix-en-Provence has chosen to leverage new technology to achieve the goals it is pursuing in the region.
That is why Axians France has installed a network of 861 sensors in public spaces around the city, which are connected to a private communication network and a data storage and management platform. Seven focus points were identified to orient the use of the sensors – pedestrian flows, lighting, public watering, heat islands, air quality, fill level of trash bins and noise.
“We aim to help mayors develop their towns to enhance quality of life. That’s why we roll out secure multi-service communication infrastructure, sensors that collect data to improve the community, the environment and energy management or to generate forecasts for urban and sub-urban transport,” said Vincent Lemoux, director at VINCI Energies Sud Est.
Juan Lopez, CTO at Axians France, highlighted the way in which Axians sets itself apart, “cities and local authorities continue to own infrastructure and data. This notion of ownership is essential because it allows them to implement a transversal infrastructure, powered by data from all the sensors they own. This interconnected infrastructure and data from the field enables mayors and local authorities to develop new services independently.”
